Criminal Justice Online: CCTV: Constant Cameras Track Violators

Criminal Justice Online: CCTV: Constant Cameras Track Violators

Today citizens are challenged with how far they want Surveillance Technology too impact their lives. The initial reaction heard by many: lose of privacy.

Not withholding the need of public safety, a more common response: "if the nature of people were not so negative, this need would not have be developed..."
The current climate of stress within the community, just surviving the cruel nature of everyday rising cost, takes hold of many individuals common sense when addressing their neighbors. The horizon is not looking that much better, unemployment gives birth to crime...period.

Surveillance has now become a necessary tool for Law Enforcement. Of course we must ensure the proper use of this technology and the focus of Public Safety has too lead this campaign. It all starts with Traffic Violators. An when done right, this technology can create needed funds for struggling villages/towns. A policeman can only write so many tickets a day, a camera?

We're challenged everyday with increased traffic flow and we all have experienced the crazy driver that by their actions creates more problems than just them being totally careless with their surrounding envirnoment.

‘Good’ Pirates what a concept....

If you are downloading stuff you wouldn’t have bought in the first place, according to economist Karen Croxson, you are probably doing the company that owns the product a big favor. You, Mr ‘Good’ Pirate, are telling your friends, adding to the media ‘buzz’ and driving up sales. Of course, but that requires forward thinking and really applies too those products that need a market or niche presence. We here have always believe that good mixure of both strategies leads to success or in this case exposer..

Websense vs Spammers - they can't hide

Websense Security Labs has discovered that Google’s popular web mail service Gmail is being targeted in recent spammer tactics. Spammers in these attacks managed to created bots that are capable of signing up and creating random Gmail accounts for spamming purposes. more...

This aggressive approach to "marketing" should wake up a few. For the rest of us, it puts a damper on using WEB 2.0 (Google's additional services) tools.

Video used right - Red Light Running Enforcement

You want compelling video - watch this site.

RedSpeed Illinois is the only company that has merged advanced wireless computer technology with the security industry to deliver an ideal solution to improve your police and fire departments’ capacity to monitor your community and more quickly respond to emergency calls for assistance. An communities have responded.

My interest IP Surveillance. Many organization(s) need to address their current system. Cable? Tape? Not live or internet accessible.

We must come to grips with one fact of life. Unemployment means crime. An the safety of others should lead any discussion. We must look beyond the traditional "goofing off" of employees.

If your facility is atleast 75,000 sq/ft you have a minimum (2) blind spots. If the value of your company is based on inventory,{cooper turns a buck}capital assets must be secured. Multipule locations {factory,engineers}
can now have a central "mobile" location and enhance your Safety Awarness Program. And who better than police, fire an emergency people, directly connected with. Business nows has the perfect vehicle to participate with the community in building safer working envirnoments. Does not that qualify for an Insurance Discount?

Trust me watch the video, I'll never approach a intersection the same again.
You people are nuts out-there....

Where's the Video, Bob?

Paul D'Arcy - VP Marketing @ MessageOne.com, had his suggestions for a guidline published this past week in Networkworld. Considering most information regarding this subject revolves around e-Discovery, the one point that needs to jump out, policies of retention, (limiting a companies liability in litigation) is now, then an still the responsibility of IT managers. Forget the fact of keeping the enterprise running, your the fall guy.

Larry Medina, RIM Professional, Chair, ARMA Standards Committee, weights in strong on the subject.

The majority of e-Discovery services available to lawyers today enhance their ability to "find" those juicy documents. And the first point of attack: YOUR RETENTION/DESTRUCTION POLICY

{note: Dell has signed a definitive agreement to acquire MessageOne, Inc}

Firefox: Yes we do have a option....

At the Southern California Linux Expo, (SCALE) Chris Blizzard of Mozilla provided insight into the future of the Firefox web browser. Firefox's mobile potential - caught my eye. Thanks again to the people @arstechnica.com for providing this update.

As the Mobile World Conference kicks off in Barcelona Spain (Feb 11-13) we need to take a step back an view one small application that continually is over looked - browser. Microsoft has taken every advantage to secure that and ensure (like PCs) you don't have an option. Apple - took care of iPhone, but what about the new players hoping to enter this market. In our opinion, if Mozilla continues to just rely on downloads, Open Source will miss another opportunity to move forward in today's enterprises. Google I hope your reading this, someone has to challenge Microsoft on all fronts, Mobile units are the platform that needs something other than MS solutions.

Distribution of content also entails portable devices, i.e. USB Flash Drive

As a duplicator we get many different request(s) and manufactures are always on the look out for new markets. Supporting their VAR Channel Market first of course.

Microboards, Minneapolis, MN takes a page out of the NEC Sales Manual. Pricing and Availability April 2008. Create the demand prior to shipment and pre-sell everything. With the explosive use of USBs which at times can envy James Bond. MB looks to catapult themselves ahead in this potential market. But what about security of the data?

Welcome in IronKey, what I like is the companies path of
first standardizing your portable media, then secure it. Many CIOs get a rude awakening when they see 5 different types of portable media carrying a companies{or some case personal} information, knowing full well (2) of those units have only the protection of someones pocket.

2008 is the year of mobility, atleast for us. Wireless Virtual World is upon us. Hopefully in the coming months some core issues of mobile work force or working from "any location" can make great strides in the work place. Old school sometimes has this brick and mortor it just cannot shake. The real problem is the people, who can and who cannot.

Flash drives have attacted themselves. We have gone from transfering data between units, too online access. Truthfully I prefer online access, my dream situation:

Lake Winnebago, Wis - Western shore line, late May. Wife hunting her bluegil or perch while I look for Walleye. Notebook, Wireless, SmartPhone just off shore from a bar/grill that is actually a "Hot Spot" for more than
fish. Camera on the Notebook, SmartPhone, heck Camera is in the boat just haven't figured how to relay the signals and go live.

RIAA: Move copyright filtering from ISPs to users’ PCs

Internet filtering suffers from a fatal flaw: it can't filter what it can't understand. If P2P protocols adopt encryption, filtering will lose much of its effectiveness, and the RIAA boss knows it. His solution? Move the filter onto your PC. We still find this attitude unacceptable.

Arguably content providers agree filters should be in place and yes all the way down to the users unit (modem). Following the idealism of this, when does advertisment cross the line. Having control of what is deemed acceptable content challenges the fundamental concept of an Open Neutral Internet. This type of monitoring applied to users' without their acceptance[hence "homeland security"], or the possible idea without it, content will be blocked, should signal the people need to wake-up. But since most don't want the burden of "responsibility" they just cave into what they are told is for their own good. RIAA has the position of protecting copyrights, we agree. But not at the expense of treating all users' as incapable of being responsible. I'll agree to filtering for copyrights, but not until you also allow me control of "Unwanted" ads. And that includes my cell/Smart Phone.

Pay Me for My Time....

Every so often items cross my screen that get my attention:

NETWORK WORLD DAILY NEWS AM ALERT

Get paid hundreds for a job interview (no, really)
Time is money, right? A startup called NotchUp says that
principle is motivating 15,000 professionals a day to sign up
for its as-yet-unpublicized service that will let users
negotiate an appearance fee of sorts with would-be employers.
Debuting at Network World's DEMO 08, the founders say the
service will produce a better pool of candidates and faster
hires for employers by enticing those not actively in the job
market. They also say 10,000 software engineers "working mostly
for top companies" have already signed on.Read more...

European Court Decides FileSharing is a Civil offense.

File-sharers were given a huge legal boost today, European Court of Justice declared that EU law does not allow ISP providers be forced to reveal the personal details of people accused of file sharing. Now the question is will someone follow this lead here in the US. Or will the RIAA open up its wallet an just pay for the info.

We still have not seen any results from Oregon an the tactics(RIAA) used on college students. Which the State's Attorney General called into question....

Selling FUN without a Video, HOW?

Continuing on our 2008 theme of bring ideas forward......

This past week in Rosemont, IL was the 29th Annual ChicagoLand Outdoors Show. An yes, despite football, cold weather and house work I did attend. {for those wondering, it's like fishing, my wife goes or I don't}

Every year we pass through the numerous displays of toys, trinkets and wonder lures anticipating ice out, {ice fishing really hasn't gotten us yet} but always look forward too visiting the numerous lodges and fishing camps that bring life back too our little part of the world. But this year, I had a little bug up my crawl....no Video...

Because the tech world we're in I have become spoiled. @ the CES Show in Vegas, attendees downloaded more than 10,000 programs onto SanDisk flash drives. But here I was still subjected to paper and still pictures, even the web site list of vendors didn't have links. An the bug start too grow...

My saturday mornings during this time is geared around watching the fishing shows from 6:00am till 10:30am. Almost too the point, when the turkey hunting series start it must be time to get out. And yes I would like to see a video of the lake, cabin and facilities where I'm going to spend the next week fishing. Some cases throw in a little bit about the surrounding area, Rhinelander Wis and Grand Rapids, Minn are wonderful places with many different attractions through out the year.

Chambers that take pride and memberships dues to pay for marketing events like this, have for some reason not taken this medium serious, which is sad. Fishman will all agree, each year we have to go a little further North because that family fishing site is sold into condo's. .....I have a camera on my boat to find fish, hello

And you thought "White" box PCs were a problem....

The same subject continues to surface, iPhone is not considered a "Corporate" device for the network. With the growth of a mobile workforce, virtual workers and just plain options, IT managers are being pressed to develop solutions that call for standards.

Following the news from Mac World, Apple should be noted for their conservative approach too integration. The platform is not even ready. And someone better address the battery issue.

The mobile application I'm looking for, download GPS fishing hot spots, it won't matter who's boat I'm in....I can view my home security system. Ice Fisherman might consider mobile cameras if access was available. Spring, I would put one at the end of the pier an have my coffee, listening too the weather, an walleye reports.

2008 brings new challenges.........

Recent survey of CIO priorities: build business skills in IT Department...
knowing a technology then having the skills to apply them within a business. Provoked these top job skills for IT people in 2008:

  • Project management skills and certifications
  • Security experience
  • Business process understanding
  • Communication skills, especially writing and teaching expertise
  • ability to manage remote workers and virtual teams

The last 2 will be my focus for 2008. This blog, an others, support that effort. Virtual teams need Web 2.0 tools, this blob has helped me identify those tools.

Like all new beginnings, first out of the box is the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas coming up. Press releases are already filling the wires. New gadgets is the theme. Polaroid's mobile Zink photo printer. {glad to see the digital age did not destroy a US land mark}Zink stands for Zero ink.

Security readers take note: Riverglassinc.com West Chicago, IL (DuPage Airport), a recent client installed their services, within hours a protest group targeting a Board Meeting was identified. One, the current Security firm was unaware of. The company is branching out of the government section in too Fortune 250. University of Illinois is behind this project.

Oregon Attorney General demans disclosure of RIAA's methods

I'm a little shocked it took so long for this action to come forward, an from Oregon no less. The University of Oregon like all said places of learning does a have an obligation to protect it's students/facility and members. Like most forward thinking areas of life a university always encouraged freedom, yet RIAA has been pretty successful at scare tactics with other know places. It's about time someone took up the question of discovery.

Anti-Piracy advocates continue to focus on small meaningless targets. Either to add merit to their cause or in most cases collect from someone who is just wants them to go away, bully tactics. But the university has a point here, spying on students? Of course, RIAA's response smoke screens the idea like their looking out for the students best interest and security.

The problem I have with all this is simple. University of Oregon should rally the troops, not just on their campus but the entire state of Oregon. RIAA watch dogs need to have the rope tightened or put them in a different yard. There focus may have merit, but the methods they employ on the targets they choose has too be called into question. Better yet, they are violating something here.....
